The 2013 Committee of the Canterbury Software Cluster

The CSI Committee is elected at each Annual General Meeting typically held in early December. All positions are voluntary. During the year, the Committee, with support from other CSI members, organises monthly meetings as well as other events and activities and the annual Canterbury Software Summit. Ben Reid (Chair) - chair@canterburysoftware.org.nz
Ben Reid is Principal Consultant at Memia Ltd - a strategic consultancy focussed on the software industry. Originally from the UK, Ben moved to Christchurch, New Zealand in 2004 and worked as a software architect for HP before founding  Memia in 2008. Ben has worked in a diverse range of vertical industries and technologies over his 18-year software career, and brings a wide-angle strategic perspective to 21st-century software businesses.  He currently acts as an advisor and technology consultant to a number of  New Zealand software companies, and is enthusiastic about growing world-class technology businesses from Canterbury - one of the top innovation, commercial and lifestyle regions in the world!


Geoff Brash (Deputy Chair) - geoff.brash@sli-systems.com
Geoff has considerable expertise in both technical and business aspects of the tech industry.  Geoff is co-founder and VP of Business Intelligence at SLI Systems and has previously held the positions of CFO and VP of Marketing.  Under Geoff's direction, SLI won the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards Marketer of the Year in 2005. Prior to SLI, he was an engineering manager at leading Internet portal Snap/NBCi.com, and has served in various technical and managerial positions in the public and financial sectors. Geoff is an active member of Canterbury Software and holds an MBA from Massey University.

Matthew Biddick (Treasurer) - matthew@rpal.co.nz
Matthew is a chartered accountant and business advisor, and is an associate at Robert Purchas & Associates. He has fifteen years of financial and business experience gained in chartered accountancy and commercial fields in both New Zealand and Australia. He has had a wide exposure to various disciplines including business advisory services, management accounting, audit, taxation and is a Xero Certified Advisor. While Matthew provides services to clients in a variety of industries, he has a particular interest in software and technology companies. He has been a committee member since 2005.

Jason Hoseason (Secretary) - jhoseason@deloitte.co.nz
Jason is a Manager in Deloitte’s Tax division. Throughout his 15 year career as a tax specialist Jason’s clients have included software, electronics and high tech engineering companies. He spent two years on secondment in Vancouver working on technology and entertainment industry clients. Jason is qualified as a Chartered Accountant and admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.


Damian Brown - damian.brown@assurity.co.nz
Damian Brown is General Manager - South Island at IT consulting firm Assurity. Damian has strong consulting project management skills, and is a qualified PRINCE2 practitioner, Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified ScrumMaster. Damian has a strong technical background with an understanding across a number of IT disciplines, primarily within the applications environment, voice, data, wireless networking, security, open systems, desktop rollouts, storage environments and operating systems. He is also experienced in the delivery of service based programmes such as ITIL and the associated process re-engineering and organisational change required to implement standards based programmes.

Chris is an IT professional with over 15 years experience developing and delivering enterprise scale software both in New Zealand and the UK. With significant consulting experience in London he has seen, experienced and helped many customers achieve their business goals through IT. Chris has a keen interest in ensuring that IT is seen as an enabler, not a hindrance, to achieving business objectives.


Dan Fowlie - dan.fowlie@trineo.co.nz
Dan is co-founder and Principal Consultant at Trineo Ltd, a company that specialises in cloud application development – a new way of building and deploying web apps using cloud platforms such as Salesforce.com, Force.com and Ruby on Rails using Heroku. He has a well respected depth of expertise in the Salesforce.com space and is a Certified Salesforce.com Administrator, Developer and Sales Cloud Consultant. He has been a committee member since 2012

David Johnstone - david@peopleresults.co.nz
David is the founding Director of People Results Ltd, a business consulting company that works with SME companies developing their growth strategies and resourcing and coaching their sales efforts. David has been involved in the HiTech industry since leaving University. He has worked in sales and management roles for Telecom NZ Ltd, Unisys, and Hindin Communications. David is a recent Past President of the Rotary Club of Riccarton, on the Board of Cholmondeley Children's Home Inc and has been on the Canterbury Software Committee for 5 years, and served as Chair during 2010-2011.

Tiffany Lissaman is a Marketing Consultant at Concentrate, a strategic marketing consultancy that helps companies with specialised technology products successfully grow their markets. Tiffany helps tech companies throughout New Zealand by implementing marketing programmes and managing their day-to-day strategic marketing activities. Tiffany is passionate about helping tech companies grow their businesses and joined the software cluster to support the growth of New Zealand’s hi-tech industry.

Peter Shaw Peter_Shaw@trimble.com
Peter Shaw is Software Development Manager for Trimble Navigation’s Mapping & GIS division. Trimble employee over two hundred professional staff in Christchurch, and over 6000 worldwide. The largest professional discipline in Trimble is software engineering, tackling problems ranging from complex embedded computational systems, to enterprise scale cloud architecture.Prior to Trimble, Peter has worked as a self-employed consultant in Financial Services, in Renewable Energy start-ups  and as IT Director for Diligent Board Books, now a public listed company on the NZX.

 

Ex Officio Committee Members


Nick Fogarty - Nicholas.Fogarty@nzte.govt.nz
Nick is Sector Manager ICT with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise with over 8 years international commercial experience. He works with a portfolio of Canterbury's leading Technology companies in order to support their international business development strategies. As a qualified Barrister and Solicitor or the High Court of New Zealand, he previously worked for London law firm Herbert Smith's commercial team before establishing a Spanish b2b consultancy linking NZ exporters with opportunities in the Iberian Peninsula. Nick then joined NZTE's Madrid office as Market Development Manager in 2007 prior to taking up the role of ICT Sector Manager in Christchurch in August 2010.

Helen is the Client Manager for the Technology sector at the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) – Christchurch City Council’s economic development agency. She has 20 years of sales, marketing and business management spent in the UK and NZ. Much of this time has been spent with technology companies and teams, including Compaq Computers and Hewlett Packard in the UK before moving to Christchurch and working with the agribusiness cooperative Ravensdown. She then moved to DataPro Solutions, later bought by Canterbury Business Solutions where she worked with clients, industry and the development teams to develop an online feedback tool aimed at the tourism sector. Her role in CDC involves supporting the growth of IT companies in Canterbury, with a particular focus on growing exports. Helen hopes her role in CDC and links with the Software Cluster will bring two-way communication and development opportunities between Christchurch business and CDC’s objectives. Helen is also a Business Mentor and the Chair of the board of the human right’s organisation Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand.

 

Associate Committee Members

The committee sometimes elects to co-opt Associate Committee Members who have specific skillsets which help with the Cluster's activities.


Jason Bishop - jason.b@get-sourced.co.nz
Jason is the Business Manager for Sourced, a specialist recruitment consultancy focused on the ICT industry. A native Cantabrian, Jason enjoyed a successful career in Architecture before a move across into Software Training & Consulting in 2008. Jason has accumulated a broad set of skills in his 14 year career, with specific strengths in Business & Systems Management and is responsible for driving the strategic growth and direction of a number of local businesses. Jason has a very strong interest in emerging technologies and is very passionate about Canterbury's IT industry and Software Cluster


Sam Jarman (Student Rep) sam@samjarman.co.nz

Sam Jarman is a Computer Science student at the University of Canterbury.

Sam is the president of the Computer Society (CompSoc) which has around 250 members. He works at Telogis part time as a software engineer. Sam also completes freelance work developing on the iOS platform. Sam's other interests include embedded programming, social media, programming competitions, networking and building the software community.
